In ancient Greece people named this plant "delight of the mountains" because it grows in higher altitudes in the Mediterranean and is widely known for its anti-bacterial properties: Origanum vulgare.

Oregano is botanically closely related to Marjoram, both belonging to the Labiatae family and mainly used as culinary herbs with characteristic flavors. The Oregano essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves and flowering tops.

What are Oregano's prominent actions?

Our Essential Oil of the Month is most valued for its anti-bacterial and emmenagogue properties. Oregano can be used for treating acute bacterial infections and conditions but it should always be diluted before application as it is a severe skin as well as mucous membrane irritant. Oregano essential oil is also known for the following properties:

- Anti-viral

- Anti-fungal

- Anti-parasitic

- Antiseptic

Blending well with Bergamot, Cedarwood, Lavender, May Chang, Orange and Lemon it is best used in a diffuser or in homemade house cleaning products.
