Our favorite oils for September

Our favorite oils for the beautiful month of September are Sweet Orange and Calendula. Here are the profiles of these wonderful plants:


Family: Rutaceae                                      
Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Extraction: Orange Peel                                      

Extraction Method: Cold Pressed

Country: Native to China, but now mainly cultivated in USA

Chemical Group: a-pinene, sabinene, myrcene, limonene, linalool, citronellal, neral and geranial

Actions: Antiseptic, anti-depressant, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, carminative, diuretic, cholagogue, sedative and tonic

Uses: Can be used effectively on the immune system, for colds and flu and to eliminate toxins from the body

Blends well with:  Black pepper, ginger, frankincense, sandalwood, vetiver

Contra-indications: Can have a phototoxic effect

Calendula Oil

Extraction: Flower

Extraction Method: Macerated – infused in Sweet Almond/Sunflower Oil

Country: Africa and India

Chemical Constituents: The chemical and physical characteristics depend on the type and quality of the fixed oil used in the maceration process and the color of the macerated oil takes on the orange-yellow color of the calendula flowers; high carotenoid content

Actions: Anthelminthic, anti-spasmodic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, bactericidal, quick healing properties, stomachic, throbbing

Uses: Can be applied to most delicate body areas, nappy rash, ulcers, bed sores, cuts and open skin, good in crushed tissues, promotes granulation in open wounds, reduces local swelling, blisters, burns, when applied constantly decreases symptoms of varicose veins and venous congestion by inhibiting inflammation, toning tissues and promoting enhanced blood supply to tissues

Blends well with: A very rich oil, best blends with thinner carrier oils such as Almond to use on skin
