The plant is usually in full bloom on around 24 June, the birthday of John Baptist from whom St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) got its name.
What are St. John's Wort prominent actions?
This shrubby plant with yellow flowers has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic as well as anti-depressant properties and is widely used to:
- Healing wounds
- Soothings burns, insect bites and inflammations, sores and ulcer
- Treating muscular pain, sciatica, rheumatism, gout and arthritis
- Reducing symptoms of mild depression
The flowers of the plant are infused in sunflower oil for approx. half a month before being pressed and strained which results in the typical bright red color of the oil.
St. John's Wort is an excellent carrier oil for aromatherapy massages, blending well with cinnamon and clary sage essential oils.
